Christianity 101: It’s not about what you do! – Wednesday, 28 February
John 14:6 ESV
Jesus didn’t come to start a new religion. He didn’t come to refresh the Jewish religion. He didn’t come to show us how to live, or give us a moral code or tell us what to do – He came to give us Life (John 10:10). When we receive that Life (Jesus) we can truly live the abundant life. Jesus came to give us access to a relationship with the Father (John 3:16; John 17:3). Religion is all about man’s efforts to reach out to God through moral behaviour, holiness and good works whereas Christianity
is all about God reaching out to man to rescue us from sin and freely forgive us and cleanse us and give us a new life.“But all these things are from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ [making us acceptable to Him] and gave us the ministry of reconciliation [so that by our example we might bring others to Him], that is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not counting people’s sins against them [but canceling them]. And He has committed to us the message of reconciliation [that is, restoration to favour with God].”
2 Corinthians 5:18-19 AMP
Christianity is all about God reaching out to man – not the other way around! God didn’t respond to men seeking after Him. The Bible says that while we were sinners Christ came and died for us (Romans 5:8). God, out of His infinite love for us, reached out to us and restored us to favour with Him – making us acceptable to Him. Here’s the good news in a nutshell: you cannot make yourself acceptable to Him, He made us (in Christ) acceptable to Himself. We’re made holy by His sacrifice – what He did for us, not what we do for Him (Hebrews 10:10).
Do you know how He did this? He did this by cancelling all our sin that was held against us. Now there is no offence standing between us and God – there is an open Way (Jesus) for us to come to God and enjoy friendship with Him, and His blessing. God is not holding anything against us because all sin was all dealt with and paid for through Christ upon the cross!
