Did Jesus abolish the law?

Did Jesus abolish the law?
“For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.”
Romans 6:14 ESV

Part of the good news of the gospel is that we’re not under law but under grace – we’re not being treated as we deserve according to our performance but rather we are being treated better than we deserve according to what Jesus has done for us and our faith in Him. The law is a ministry of death (2 Corinthians 3:7) which produces condemnation and death (2 Corinthians 3:6, 9). No matter how hard you try to live up to the standard of the law you will never be good enough and so it’s great news that we’re not under law but under grace!

“But Jesus didn’t come to abolish the Law, Shayne!” is a response I often get to what I have just said. And my response is, “Amen!”

17 “Do not think that I came to do away with or undo the Law [of Moses] or the [writings of the] Prophets; I did not come to destroy but to fulfil. 18 For I assure you and most solemnly say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke [of the pen] will pass from the Law until all things [which it foreshadows] are accomplished.”
Matthew 5:17-18 Amplified Bible (AMP)

Jesus didn’t come to destroy or abolish the Law or the Prophets (speaking of the Old Testament) but rather He came to fulfil them. The word “fulfil” means to make full, to perfect, complete or finish. Jesus is saying that He came to complete the law, to bring it to an end or to perfect it.

We’ll all agree that Jesus did what He came to do, and therefore the law has now been brought to an end. Trying to relate to God under the law is impossible. Matthew 5:18 shows us that the law stood until all was fulfilled and in John 19:30 Jesus declared that “it is finished”. Jesus accomplished many things through His sacrifice, one of those things being that He fulfilled the law. Through His sacrifice, He completed it and brought it to an end, so that we could relate to God under a new and better covenant.

“But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises.”
Hebrews 8:6 KJV

We relate to God under a better covenant – we are no longer treated as we deserve (law) but we are treated better than we deserve (grace). The law condemns the best (because you’ll never be good enough) while grace justifies the worst! We are not trying to obtain God’s blessing and acceptance through performance and effort because in Christ we are blessed with every spiritual blessing (Ephesians 1:3) and we are accepted by faith in Him (Romans 5:1) independent of our performance. Thank You, Jesus!
